The Life of an Artist is a brand new feature on the blog and I am so excited to share some amazing artists with you over the next few months. For a few months I have been "stalking" some of my favorite artists and somehow convincing them to answer my questions and appear here :)
The first artist is someone you guys are going to love. I honestly was captivated by her work from the moment I stumbled upon it. I have several of her prints and posters on my birthday wishlist **cough cough, family, cough cough** but enough of me rambling, here is your first "Life of an Artist"...
-Tell us about yourself.
My name is Jodi Fuchs. I create visionary abstract paintings that are very much influenced by my meditation and yoga practice. I have a thing for color, and movement and texture. I love pushing paint around and being in that place of discovery and pure expression with it. I paint from the inside out, whereas other people paint from the outside in. They paint what they see. I paint what I feel.
I love and teach Kundalini yoga. My favorite thing in the entire world is to swim with wild
dolphins. Eye to eye. Uh-maze-ing. Oh, and I have a thing for good salad bars. and Peet's coffee.
- how did you get started painting? when did you begin selling your work?
I began painting years ago working as a decorative painter, doing faux finishes and stenciling in multi-million dollar homes. It's extremely physical work and after nearly 20 years of doing it, I decided it was time to switch gears.
When I lived in Santa Fe, NM 10 years ago, I began focusing more on my fine art. But it's really
been in the last 5 years that I've made a real go at it. I've been lucky in that just about every time I showed my work, something sold. So I knew I was on the right track. I have a publisher now that makes posters of my work and I also rent out pieces for TV and film sets.
- what inspires your art? what is the typical process in developing a new painting?
My art is inspired by what's going on in my life at the time. I can see exactly where I was "at"
looking at different paintings of mine. Oh, that one was when I came back from Bali and I felt really
open and connected to lotus flowers. Or, I was doing a meditation for 40 days and this piece came out of that. Or, I heard on Good Morning America that "143" means "I Love You" when text messaging. I should use that in a painting. Which I subsequently did.
My process begins by tacking a large piece of canvas to the wall. I just start filling it up with whatever color I feel drawn to. It really all starts with color. I move the paint around. Put it on, take it off. The painting reveals itself. I never plan anything.
- I saw on your website you recently won a studio/ gallery for your work, could you tell us a little bit more about that.
Yes, this is incredibly exciting. I won a contest called "art of santa monica" sponsored by Archstone Apartments. I saw a tiny little ad in the LA Weekly and it said, submit your favorite piece, win $1000 and free gallery space for 6 months. I entered my piece "5 5 5: A Big Change is Coming" among over 150 other artists.
"5 5 5" was a bit of a departure from how I'd been painting in that it was really loose, had a graffiti feel to it. I loved it so I submitted it and won the contest! I'll be offering limited edition prints of the painting for the 6 months I'm here.
As for the gallery, I have a 2500 square foot space to play in. I moved my art studio here as well, so it's a combo platter: Jodi Fuchs Art studio and gallery.
The Grand Opening is Aug. 14th 2010 and I can't wait to share the space with the community.
I will have a group show to benefit the Ocean, a holiday bazaar, 2 guest artists a month, possibly teach some yoga out of here on a donation basis. I'm imagining Bollywood movie nights screening on the big white walls. Anything could happen.
(2000 Main St. in Santa Monica open wed - sun 12 - 6 and by appointment)
- What is your favorite piece you've made or project you've worked on so far?
Right now my favorite piece is my largest painting called "Thanks For Reminding Me". It's 4' x 9' and
was inspired by a guy I was dating. At first he was represented in the painting (we were kissing smack dab in the middle of the piece) but for some reason I couldn't get his face right in the painting. I tried three times! So I painted him out of the piece.
Well, you can imagine what happened after that! We stopped seeing each other, but I got a great painting out of it. It's about seeing the "yes" in all situations, visioning what you want, the union of masculine and feminine. I think it's my strongest piece to date.
-Where do you want to be as an artist in 1yr? 5yrs? 10yrs?
ooh, in one year I'll have been in this new space for 6 months and had 6 months to recover.
I see lots of sales and commissioned pieces. New licensing deals....perhaps a line of home products.
I'm getting married! (well, why not put it out there)
5 years? I'll be teaching yoga, teaching painting, traveling the world conducting creativity workshops,
living part time in Hawaii, waking up to swim with the dolphins then head off to my amazing tropical
art studio. For some reason, I keep looking younger.
In 10 years....more of the above!

What I Wore
So last year I found an etsy shop called Thrillian Designs :) It's the most adorable shop with clothes made by a rad New York lady named Jillian.
So I bought this firefly dress from her, and I'm finally enjoying being able to wear it. I mean it's cold in Wisconsin where I attend college, haha. So Washington has been good to this little number... please excuse the poor quality photobooth photos...
So if you guys need a unique place to shop, check her out. :)
She has sooo many cute items like these:

Random Wants
soooo lately I keep finding things I really want... but I'm trying to only buy things I need. I'll share them with you anyways. :)
This adorable Fox Shirt :) I think this may be my weakness and I may breakdown and treat myself. **update: I bought it, I couldn't help myself, haha **
Mini Book Kit: I already bought Elise's summer one and can't wait to put it together. I love this one as well, but can't justify it since I've been in 3 different cities in 3 months... not sure which I'd use, haha.
A Custom Address Stamp: I want one soooo badly, but seeing as I'm graduating in like 9 months it's not that practical to get one yet. The people at our student post office already think I'm wacko cause I ship like 10 packages a week for my shop.

I've been so good lately in not spending my money. I'm actually very proud of myself. I've been putting $10 a week in my savings account as well as any profits from Etsy.
Are you guys saving or have you bought anything you just love lately? Let me know :)

My Weekend
consisted of a new silly hat. Our town had a cute little art festival and my friends and I all bought custom airbrush hats... in my defense these are a JOKE and I have actually never owned an airbrushed item in my life. My friend got one with a city outline that says "I run this." I myself tried to make mine appear like a joke, so that way no one had to wonder... here is the result.
Sunday was spent with my cousins at the boat races. It was an amazing experience, I had no idea this stuff took place. The house we watched them from was an old ranch style, but had that Hollywood feel to it. It was huge and had an amazing view from their wrap around porch.
In crafty news, I finished two plywood wall art posters thanks to the help of Kara, Mandi and Vanessa. I think I was flooding twitter with questions on specifics of these things. I made one for my best friend Chris that uses lyrics from the Kid Cudi song "Pursuit of Happiness" and then I also made one for myself (not pictured) that says "All good things are wild and free." I am sooo happy with them. Can't wait to see them up in dorm rooms.
How was your weekend? Anything exciting? I think I need to dedicate next weekend to the shop, I've got a lot of new supplies and want to have an update soon. :)
I'll leave you with a new phone photo :) xoxo

Guest Blogger: Ashley Watts
Hi Everyone - I'm Ashley from Almost Exactly!
First, a big THANK YOU for Samantha letting me guest-blog...and, of course, for I&C turning 1! Congrats! :D
I've been wanting to bake so much lately (which isn't very good for my diet, by the way!) and I came across this recipe in my notebook for Honey Cinnamon frosting. Besides, every birthday needs cupcakes, right??
For the record, I'm pretty sure I originally found this on Martha Stewart, but I decided to share it with you guys! :)
Here's what you'll need:
1 box of cake mix
Honey
Confectioner's sugar
Unsalted Butter
Ground Cinnamon (not shown)
Cupcake pan (not shown)
Cupcake liners
Electric Mixer (not shown)
Step One: Make cake mix as described on the back of the box. Pour into cupcake pan/liners.
Yes, I totally went the easy route with the cake mix. And any cake mix will do. I found that "spicier" mixes taste better. For this one I used carrot cake mix, but my taste buds inform me that pumpkin spice and maybe even banana bread mix will do just as nicely. :)
Step Two: In medium-sized bowl, mix in the following ingredients:
1 1/4 cup confectioner's sugar
1/2 cup unsalted butter (at room temperature)
1 Tablespoon honey
1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
You're going to need an eletric mixer for this - it can get a little hard to stir! If it looks like it won't mix together then you're probably doing it right, lol - just keep mixing! Eventually it will look like this:
(Sorry for the fingerprint in the frosting. I had to try it! :P)
Of course, after the cupcakes have completely cooled, frost those bad boys!
**JUST SO YOU KNOW!! The recipe frosts about 12 cupcakes. You'll have to make another batch of frosting for all 24 cupcakes!
Also, the frosting is a little on the sweet side. I could only eat one cupcake (which is GOOD for my diet! lol).
I hope you guys enjoyed and if you happen to make the frosting, let me know what you thought! :)
Have a wonderful rest of the week and Happy Birthday, Indie and Chic!
xoxo

She Dared Me...
Kara over at "I Just Might Explode" dared her readers to take a self-portrait with no makeup on... needless to say this might be the only photo on the internet where I'm not wearing mascara... I hate my clear eyelashes...
it was so hard to only edit it to black and white. so I dare you all as well... embrace yourself.

Indie and Chic : A Love Story
So being the birthday week and all, I thought I'd give you guys the story of how Indie and Chic began. Hopefully, this will inspire some others to go after what they are passionate about, no matter what stage of your life you are in.
November 2007: I was a tiny little Freshmen in college.
I had an extremely large amount of spare time on my hands and the internet had become my new best friend. I discovered scrapbooking, specifically Paperclipping. I bought supplies and started documenting my life. Towards the end of the month, I came across a scrapbooking supply store on Etsy... I was blown away. I think I spent the next 2 weeks of my life scouring over every inch of Etsy. I was amazed at all the creative people selling THEIR handmade items from the comfort of their own homes. It was the beginning of a wonderful relationship.
So then in May of 2008, I created a website called The Everyday Scrapper (I now no longer run it ). I used the website to talk about my scrapbooking projects and review companies I had talked into sending me their products.
It was an amazing time in my life, I was reaching out to all of these creative people and being so young their response was amazing. I found Elsie F from Love, Elsie scrapbook designs and then began the next big "relationship" in my story. I was obsessed. I think I read her whole blog all the way back to the beginning. I was in love with how young she was and yet how successful and happy she was. I was after that same happiness.
In July of 2008 I contacted Elsie and reviewed her embroidery patterns and made a video about how to use the patterns to create felt embellishments for your scrapbooks.
From there a new venture was born... I attached my creation to a thin elastic CVS headband and WHAM! it hit me. I could make headbands and sell them on Etsy. And so for the next several months I bought yards of felt, and made hundreds of headbands. I gave them to all the girls at school and found a new craft friend Laura. We began trying new designs and she made an excellent hairband model.
In Dec of 2008 I created an Etsy shop called TheEverydayScrapper to go along with a website I had started. I added scrapbooking stuff as well as the headbands I was making with Laura. I then started making a few rings and bobby pins for the store. I loved it, it was so much fun, and the extra spending money wasn't bad.
Then in July of 2009, I took a huge leap and branded my business. I had thought up the name Indie and Chic back in March and made the huge shop switch over on July 18th, 2009. I had so many more styles and options and that first month was more than I could have imagined. I even made it to the front page of etsy!
So there it is, the story of Indie and Chic, and it is still continuing. I have so many more visions for the business and one day I hope it is more than just jewelry and accessories, but I can't tell you all my secrets. *wink*
Don't let anything get in the way of your dreams. So many people can't believe I fit in this business with my full class loads at school, but to me this isn't work, it's my passion. I would be sad without it. If you love something and it makes you happy, you do and can have the time to pursue it. I can't imagine my life without this little business.
And thanks to everyone who has been a part of Indie and Chic, I appreciate it more than you can ever know :)
xoxo

Guest Blogger : Elise Joy
A lot of people make new year's resolutions.
I decided instead to make birthday resolutions.
And rather than trying to establish new good habits or break bad habits, I make a list of fun things to accomplish in before my next birthday. When I turned 23, I picked 23 things. At 24, 24 things. And this year, I am working my way through a list of 25 things.
Some are easy : play with chalk
Some are more difficult : surf (with success)
But all are meant to get me going and feeling inspired throughout the year.
I love this project and highly recommend it if you are looking for something fun to motivate you to try new things. I work on my new list in the month leading up to my birthday and try to cross items off the old list throughout the year. I don't put any pressure on myself to complete every item, but working on it is usually pretty fun.
In years past, I have started small scrapbooks to chart the progress. So far, this years' is coming along nicely.
What do you think? Would you try a list starting at your next birthday? You can follow the progress on my list here.
Thanks, Samantha for having me guest blog!
love, elise

big thanks to Elise for being a guest blogger, she is someone I look up to so much :)
